It's not just us recommending that you plan your funeral. Financial author, radio host, and television personality Dave Ramsey strongly endorses funeral planning. "Preplanning a funeral is truly a gift to your family," according to Ramsey. "Doing the legwork and setting things up ahead of time so your family doesn’t have to make a lot of financial decisions in the middle of an emotional situation shows them respect and consideration."
Suze Orman concurs on funeral planning telling her audience that emotional overspending is a near-certainty when arrangements are left to a grieving family. "You don’t want your family to be in a position where they are grieving and have to make decisions," Orman cautions. "They will always overspend. Always."
Consumer advocate Clark Howard also urges funeral planning. "Make these decisions far in advance of any need," states Howard. "Plan now to save big bucks later."
No Funeral Planning = Paying More
Not having a funeral plan typically also means you end up paying more. According to the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), families who do not pre-plan their funeral often spend 20% to 40% more than those who develop a plan. With the 2023 median cost of a traditional funeral-with-burial coming in at about $8,300 (excluding cemetery fees), this can result in $1,500 to $3,500 in unwanted additional costs.
In addition, there is the emotional overspending factor to consider. Families under stress may feel compelled to overspend on caskets, services, or add-ons that can push that $8,300 median cost to $10,000 to $15,000 or more.
What Happens If You Don't Have a Funeral Plan?
Think about what happens if you don't have a funeral plan in place. Grieving loved ones have to try recalling or guessing at what you'd want at a funeral. In an already stressful situation, loved ones are feeling pressure to make quick decisions. Pictures, videos, and other memories may not be gathered in time for memoriam.
